In college, I took classes in midwifery with an eye toward that career. Something about it didn't 'click' with me, and I went on to pursue my other interests, acting and writing, eventually getting my M.F.A. from The Actors Studio in New York City.
A few years later, a friend asked me to be with her and her husband when she gave birth to their first child. The nurse came in when I was massaging my friend's feet and asked if I was her doula. I had to ask her what a 'doula' was, and when she told me, I realized that I hadn't wanted to be a midwife in college, I had wanted to be a doula!!
I am now in the process of getting my certification through DONA [Doulas of North America]. I am thankful and honored every time a couple invites me to be a part of their childbirth experience. My husband, Charlie, is very supportive of my work, and we hope soon to have children of our own.
A personal note: throughout this website, I use 'dad, and 'partner' interchangably and sometimes use both gender pronouns. Although most clients are heterosexual, I am dedicated in my practice to offering support to lesbian couples as well as gay male couples who are working with a surrogate. |
